1. Who is responsible to fix the portion of my driveway located in the city right-of-way?

The property owner is responsible. You can do the work yourself if you can meet the requirements of the city for insurance and have adequate knowledge and experience to replicate the driveway.

2. Why does the City have to inspect the work if I am responsible to fix the driveway?

To insure that the driveway meets the city requirements so that it doesn't become a liability to the city since it is located in the right-of-way

3. Why can't I have several driveways to my property?

Too many driveways create many places for the average motorist and pedestrian to watch for existing vehicles. The average home only needs one driveway.

4. Where is my property line?

While we can give you information to help you determine where your property lines are located, only a licensed survey can provide a legal location of the exact location.

1. Why is my driver's license suspended?

To find out why your license is suspended, you should contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in Topeka. The phone number is (785) 296-3671 and (785) 296-3613 (TTY only) or access http://www.ksrevenue.org/. Be sure to make note of the location/court and case numbers they give you.

2. I received a ticket for 'no proof of liability insurance' for the vehicle I was driving. What are my options?

If you had insurance coverage on the vehicle at the time the ticket was issued or coverage for yourself, you may bring proof of such coverage to the Court Clerk before or on your arraingment date. If you did not have insurance on the vehicle at the time the ticket was issued, you must appear in court on your arraignment date.

3. Can I get a diversion of any charge(s) against me?

A diversion is a contract between you and the City related to the disposition of the charge(s). A diversion contract can allow you to avoid a conviction. You stipulate that the offense(s) charged did in fact occur and you promise to obey the law for twelve months. You may be required to pay fines, fees or restitution, attend classes or counseling, perform community service, or meet with a court services officer. If you comply with the terms of the diversion agreement, the charges against you will be dismissed. If you do not comply, the City may revoke your diversion and proceed with prosecution.

4. Can I have my Municipal Court arrest and/or conviction expunged?

An 'expungement' removes an arrest or conviction from your criminal record. Whether you can have your conviction expunged depends upon state law. You may have the right to have your arrest and/or conviction expunged after the passage of three or five years, depending on the offense. Expungement fee is $50.00 per charge. NOTE: A DUI conviction is subject to different rules.

5. Can I appeal the Judge's decision?

You have the right to appeal the conviction to the district court. You must file a Notice of Appeal with the Municipal Court within 14 days of your conviction. When you file your Notice of Appeal, you MUST post an appeal bond that has been set by the Judge.

1. Where do I pay my parking ticket fine?

You can pay your parking ticket fine at Dodge City Municipal Court at 806 North Second Avenue.

The police can do an extra patrol around your home while your are on vacation. To set this up, please call our Ford County Communications Center at 620-227-4646.

3. How do I find out the road conditions?

You can the toll free number 1-800-585-ROAD (7623). This is provided by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

4. What number do I call to see if there are school closings?

5. How much does a report cost?

Reports cost $1.00 a page $5.00 for a complete offense report.

6. How can I obtain my driving record (MVR)?

You need to contact the Drivers License Bureau in the basement of the Village Square Mall, 2601 Central Avenue. They are closed on Mondays and open Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

7. Where do I go to get my vehicle inspected so I can get my title?

Vehicles are inspected on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. at the Ford County Sheriff's Office, located at 11311 E. Comanche.

8. Where do I go when I get a traffic ticket?

If the ticket is from the Dodge City Police Department, you need to go to Municipal Court, located at 806 North Second Avenue, 225-8107. If it is a Kansas Highway Patrol or Ford County Sheriff's Office ticket, you need to go to the Ford County District Court, located at 101 West Spruce, 227-4608.

9. Where do I go to register my vehicle?

To register your vehicle, you will need to go to the Third Floor of the Ford County Government Center, located at Central and Gunsmoke, Monday-Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. If you are from out of state, you will need to go to the Ford County Sheriff's Office to get your vehicle inspected first.

10. Where do I go to get a Kansas drivers license.

To get a Kansas drivers license, you will need to go to the basement of the Village Square Mall, located at 2601 Central Avenue, 227-3944, 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Tuesday through Friday.

11. What do I do if my vehicle is impounded by the Dodge City Police Department?

The registered owner needs to bring a picture ID and proof of ownership (registration or title) to the police department to get a vehicle release form to take to the tow company.

12. Where do I go to complete a fingerprint card?

Whoever is requiring your fingerprints will supply you with a fingerprint card. Bring the card along with photo ID to the police departmart. There will be a $10.00 charge.

13. How do I report a crime?

To report a crime, please call 620-227-4646. If it is an emergency, please call 911. If you wish, you may come to the police department and report the crime, if it occurred within the city limits of Dodge City. If the crime occurred outside the city limits and still inside Ford County, please go to the Ford County Sheriff's Office. If the crime occured elsewhere, you will need to contact the proper jurisdiction to report it.

14. Where do I obtain weather information?

You can call 227-3311 for the National Weather Service, or call 225-9600 for Fidelity State Bank time and tempature. You may also go to www.weather.com/weather/local/67801 to check the weather online.

1. What day is my trash picked up?

It depends on if you have a polykart or a dumpster. Call (620) 225-8170 and tell us your address and we can tell you your scheduled day.

2. Do I have to call everytime I have limbs at the curb?

No, if the limbs are placed at the curb, they will be picked up on your normal trash day. However, it will help us to schedule our workers more efficiently if you do notify us if you have additional items for pickup.

3. Does the city provide trash service to businesses?

No, you must contract with either Northern Disposal (620) 225-3371 or B&E Waste Systems (620) 225-6580.

4. What do I do with furniture, mattresses, stoves, refrigerators, etc?

Have the store where you bought the item haul it away. If this is not possible, place the items at the curb. Call Public Works at 620-225-8170 to schedule the item for pickup. There is a $5.00 fee per item charge for disposal. You may also haul them to the landfill yourself. Please remove the door from the refrigerator or freezer before placing it by the curb.

5. What hours is the landfill open?

Monday-Friday from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday from 7:00 am - 10:30 am. Call the Ford County landfill at (620) 225-5288 for more information.

1. Why can't I dump my used motor oil in the alley?

Not only the used motor oil can contaminate the ground water, runoff from the alley will eventually reach the river or nearby lakes and ponds and can adversely affect aquatic life.

2. Why do I have to contain the silt on my construction site?

The soil that is carried away during a rain event ends up in the city's drainage systems and streets. Not only is this costly for the city to clean up, it can also cause our drainage system to fail. In addition, silt entering our rivers have a negative impact on aquatic life.

3. What happens if I don't keep my silt containment in good working condition?

The city, KDHE, or EPA may fine the individual permit holder and require all work cease until the situation is addressed.

1. Who is responsible for the repair of the potholes?

Report to Street Department and location will be added to the list. Owners are responsible for potholes on private property.

2. What streets are cleaned during snow storms?

Arterial, collector, emergency routes and school routes are cleaned first. Once completed, residential streets that have drifting problems are cleaned.

3. How do I report a missing or damaged street sign?

4. Who is responsible for street lights?

The city maintains all traffic signals. The local electric provider maintains all other lights.

1. How do I sign up for water, sewer & trash service?

Services can be signed up in person at the Water Counter at City Hall. Please bring photo ID, social security number, and a copy of your lease agreement or receipt from your landlord showing when you moved in (if you are renting). The cost for starting new service is $26.00, which has to be paid when you sign up. After 5:00 pm the cost for starting new service is $52.00.

For locations that have had services in the past (not new construction), you can also try our online service request at the main Utility Billing page.

2. How do I discontinue my service?

You may discontinue your service by calling the Utility Billing Department at (620) 225-8111 and talking to a customer service representative or coming into our office in person. They will ask you for your forwarding address where your final bill will be sent.

3. If my service has been discontinued due to non-payment, how much is the delinquency fee?

The delinquency fee is $40.00, which will automatically post to the account no earlier than 5:00 p.m. on the due date on the reminder. This fee must be paid plus the past due balance before the account will be reactivated.

4. Can I have the amount due on my utility bill automatically withdrawn from my bank account each month?

Yes - contact the Utility Billing office at 225-8111 or come in to sign a Bank Account Withdrawal Authorization form. Please bring a cancelled check or deposit slip with you from the account you wish to use.

5. If my account has been turned over to collections for non-payment, can I still sign up for new service?

Not until your past due balance(s) has been paid. They can be paid at the Water Counter before you sign up for new service.

6. Can I receive e-mail notification of my utility bill?

Yes! Please e-mail ritas@dodgecity.org with your service address and account number and request e-notification for your utility account. You will still continue to receive a postcard bill as well.

7. How can I get a City of Dodge City flag?

Official City of Dodge City flags are now available for the public to purchase at City Hall (806 N. 2nd Ave.). The 3' x 5' flag is $45.00.

1. Where is my water or sewer tap located?

The Utilities Division can locate these for you. Call 225-8176 to schedule a locate.

2. My water service is leaking. Who is responsible to fix this?

If the leaks occurs between the meter and your home/business, it is your responsibility to fix it. Otherwise notify the Utility Division at 225-8176 so that the leak can be fixed.

3. How can I tell if I have a leak?

Call the Utility Division at 225-8176. They will schedule a time to come to your site and check for leaks.

4. What do I do if my sewer line backs up to my home?

A backup indicates that the line is plugged or broken. The problem could be located in your service line or the city's main line. First don't run any more water in your home. Second call the Utility Division at 225-8176. They will determine if the city's line is blocked. If it is clean, you will need to hire your own plumber to clear or repair your service line.

5. I have red water coming from my faucets, what is wrong?

Red water indicates that rust is present in the cast iron pipes and it has been disturbed. The city may have recently cleaned lines, flushed them or had a line break. If it does not clear up by running the water for a few minutes, please call the water department at 225-8176.
