Responsibilities
The engineering services department oversees two main activities of the city’s traffic operation:
- Traffic regulatory measures
- Traffic control devices
Regulatory Measures
Traffic regulatory measures consist of the laws, ordinances, and resolutions issued for the purpose of vehicle, driver and pedestrian control. These traffic measures are intended to regulate and control the safe and efficient operation of vehicles in the traffic way. The basic measures include intersection control, speed controls, one-way streets, and parking control.
Control Devices
Traffic control devices include the design, installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and temporary traffic control for construction zones.
Prior to any adoption of a regulatory measure or use of any device, it is necessary for the department to examine the advantages, disadvantages, warrants and studies to establish the jurisdiction and legality of such regulatory measures.
