In late 2025, the City learned about a federal grant program that could help pay for improvements at local railroad crossings. The program has an estimated $5 billion available nationwide and is specifically focused on projects that improve passenger rail routes. Because of this narrow focus, fewer communities are eligible to apply, which increases the City’s chances of receiving funding. If awarded, the grant could cover up to 80 percent of the project cost, with the remaining 20 percent provided through non-federal funding.
The City of Dodge City has applied for the FY 24-25 Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Grant Program to address the blocked crossing issue in Downtown Dodge City. If awarded, the funding would allow the City to permanently close the railroad crossing at 1st Avenue and build a safer underpass at the 2nd Avenue crossing. These improvements would reduce delays caused by trains, improve safety, and help keep traffic moving more smoothly through the community.
