The City of Dodge City Parks and Facilities Department will host tree-planting services recognizing Arbor Day on Friday, April 29th. Tree plantings will be conducted at Mariah Hills Golf Course and Beeson Arboretum.
Arbor Day tree plantings will begin at Mariah Hills Golf Course on April 29th at 9 am. Staff will be planting a Bald Cypress tree for former City Parks and Facilities Director, Paul Lewis, to celebrate his career and contributions to our community. The tree will be planted east of the Pro Shop, where the cart paths split between Holes Six and Nine Greens.
At 11:30 am, staff will continue to celebrate the day by planting trees in Beeson Arboretum. The trees will be of a species new to the park to continue the department’s efforts to provide a place for the public to visually see different varieties of trees planted in our planting zone and sustain a long healthy life with proper care. All trees at Beeson Arboretum are marked with a plaque to identify their common name easily.
In recognition of Arbor Day, City Parks and Forestry staff selected Chilton Park as this year's annual tree-planting project. Staff will focus on Chilton Park, in the area where the playset is to be replaced. Approximately 25 trees will be planted, ranging from medium to large deciduous trees. Arbor Day is a national celebration sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation to promote the planting and care of trees. Each year the Foundation recognizes communities that have made tangible efforts in tree planting and care as a "Tree City USA" member. Dodge City is one of sixteen communities in the country that have received the Tree City USA designation for 45 consecutive years since the award's inception in 1976.
