City of Dodge City staff has made the decision to stop the Fairway Drive asphalt overlay project in favor of completely reconstructing the street from Comanche St. to University Drive. The asphalt inlay that was completed last fall started to fail in areas, and additional concerns were uncovered during the repair process.
“When work restarted, it was discovered that portions of the existing asphalt street did not have sufficient thickness for the inlay operation,” said Director of Engineering Services Ray Slattery. “Also, the sub-grade under the street had become wet over the years and is not stable. Without doing major modifications to the sub-grade, any maintenance operation would not have lasted as long as it should.”
Engineering staff halted the repair work once the issues to the street were found and worked to develop a plan to move forward. Staff has contacted several contractors requesting bids for concrete pavement and asphalt pavement along with estimated work timelines.
“We fully understand the inconvenience this is to the residents along Fairway Dr. and those who have to access it to reach their neighborhoods,” Slattery said. “We are trying to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. However, it may take a few months before the street is back open to free-flowing traffic.”
