Lateral Transfer Program For Detective

Lateral Transfer Program For Detective

All Lateral transfers will be based on State, County, or City Law Enforcement. Prior military, corrections, and federal law enforcement experience will not be eligible. All transfers would have to be eligible for Kansas reciprocity through KLETC. If KLETC will not accept their state certification then they must start out at the beginning of the pay scale as a new recruit.

Experience will be based on comparable population and comparable call load to Dodge City and years of service. Officers who come from an agency that is smaller and/or has less of a call load will be evaluated and placed in the pay scale by city administration.

At least five years of experience as a Police Officer will be required. Years of experience as a Detective or Investigator will weigh heavily on placement on the pay scale. No lateral transfer would be placed past step 5 on the pay scale. (i.e. at four years of experience as a Detective step 2, six years of experience as a Detective step 3, at eight years of experience as a Detective step 4 and with 10 or more years of experience as a Detective step 5)

The testing process would be the same as Police Officer lateral transfers with additional detective questions in the oral board process and an added affidavit process.

The process would be open for Detective January through June of each year. The process will only be used when there are open slots in the Detective Bureau. In June the process will be closed and allow for in house testing for Detective. If after in house testing there are still positions open for Detective it will be open for lateral transfers.

If hired a lateral transfer for the Detective Bureau would have to complete FTO in patrol before moving into the Detective Bureau. The training would be to familiarize the employee with our policy and procedures.
