Based on a positive administration review of the volunteer program and its contribution to the community, the City Commission of Dodge City passed an Ordinance in 1997, making the Citizen Police Auxiliary a permanent division of the Dodge City Police Department.
Normally, Academy Alumni or other volunteer organizations operate as nonprofit associations requiring them to obtain IRS 501-c nonprofit status and file annual IRS Form 990 reports. Through the unusual approach of establishing the Auxiliary as a division of the Police Department by ordinance, the Citizen Auxiliary program did not require filing for nonprofit status and members are covered by city liability insurance, among other administrative and funding benefits.
