On June 10, 1997 the residents of Dodge City / Ford County voted overwhelmingly to approve the adoption of a combination one-half cent county retail sales tax and a city one-half cent retail sales tax to fund four
specific public projects:
- Expansion and improvement of existing field sports facilities, including the development of a new softball / baseball complex, soccer facilities and improvements to Cavalier Baseball Field, as well as other youth ball-fields.
- Construction of an outdoor motor sports facility to include automobile racing, drag strip and motor sports events.
- Improvements to the existing civic center, including air conditioning of the facility and other improvements to provide a more comfortable atmosphere for community events.
- Construction of a special events center to attract and host various events such as concerts, indoor sports events, conventions and trade shows.
